Here's a new page for
AKAI SG01k. SG01k is just a little GM module. Not much is editable, but I heard it uses the same chip as
S2000/S3000 sampler series.
I tried to see what can be done when its 4 MIDI parts are layered. I made a SG01k editor for
Emagic SoundDiver to make layering easier, by modifying the adaptation for
AKAI SG01v vintage sound module that I previously made.
I recorded some .mp3s by layering the sounds and adding MIDI delay and aftertouch modulation.
In recording the examples, I thought that SG01k sounds kind of 'soft' to me. Softness often leads to thin and flat quality that we don't want. But in a positive way, it can be seen as sounding tender.
When I played AKAI SG01v, I wondered how it's relevant to 'vintage.' To me at that time, 'vintage' should have been more heavily-sounding. So I layered many sounds, but it made just a mixture instead of added heavy weight.
This time I played SG01k, and came to think that it's SG01 series' own personal character - they are PCM synths that sound soft and tender.
Every synth has its own assets. So I tried to explore this side of SG01k, rather than aiming at heavy layers.
